Journal of Enterprise Architecture™
Author Guidelines for the Submission of Manuscripts
Overview: The following are the required guidelines for authors to follow in submitting manuscripts related to research findings, practitioner methodologies, and current issues in the field of Enterprise Architecture that are to be considered for publication in the Journal of Enterprise Architecture™ (JEA). JEA is a peer-reviewed journal that serves scholars and practitioners who are interested in the advancement of the field of Enterprise Architecture. In general, Enterprise Architecture is distinguished from other forms of information technology architecture in that the practice of Enterprise Architecture seeks to describe all or part of a public or private sector enterprise from an integrated strategy, business, and technology perspective. This includes strategic goals and initiatives, line of business activities, information flows and systems, applications and services, voice/data/video networks, and other technology resources. JEA is the principle publication of the Association of Enterprise Architects (a|EA), a global non-profit organization.
Contact Information: On-line communication with authors is strongly encouraged. Manuscript questions and submissions should be addressed to the current JEA Editor at

. Author correspondence with specific JEA editors should be conducted via email to their respective personal addresses (when provided). JEA and a|EA offices are located at: 6822 Beechview Drive, Falls Church, VA, USA 22042.
Sponsors: JEA is sponsored by a|EA, the Institute for Software Research International at Carnegie Mellon University, and the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.
Publication Deadlines: JEA is published quarterly, with an additional special issue in the fall that supports the annual a|EA international conference. Author submission dates and editor review dates for each issue are as follows:

Note: the review process for other types of JEA manuscripts (e.g., EA Book, Tool, Conference Reviews, Member’s Issues, and Opinions submissions) differs slightly from these guidelines. 1-3 page manuscripts will be both solicited and reviewed by the JEA Editor with the assistance of an internal review panel, usually selected from the JEA Editorial Board.
Review Process: Shortly after each issue’s initial manuscript due date, the JEA Editorial Board performs a screening of manuscript submissions to eliminate those which do not fit the theme of the issue, are significantly flawed in terms of format, or are determined to be significantly below JEA’s standards. Due to the overall page count goals for each issue, manuscript page length should be in the 5-12 page range, though longer manuscripts will be considered (author justification required… see format guidelines). Rejected manuscripts are immediately returned to the author via email with the reason for rejection.
Manuscripts passing the screening are assigned to a sponsoring Associate Editor who coordinates reviews with at least three peer reviewers from the Editorial Board, a|EA membership, and/or recognized external subject matter experts. To ensure impartial peer reviews, a “blind” review process is used whereby the JEA Editor and sponsoring Associate Editor are aware of the author’s identity, but the reviewers are not. Peer reviews are collected and summarized by the sponsoring Associate Editor, who makes a publication recommendation to the Editor. The Editor then makes a publication decision based on the recommendations of the sponsoring Associate Editor and peer reviewer’s. The Editor notifies the sponsoring Associate Editor of the publication decision, and the sponsoring Associate Editor notifies the author via email. Total time from initial submission to author notification is about 90 days.
Three types of publication decisions can be made by the Editor:
1. Accept. The author is notified by the sponsoring Associate Editor of the acceptance of the manuscript as-is.
2. Accept with Modification. The author is notified by the sponsoring Associate Editor of the acceptance of the manuscript if indicated changes are made by the final manuscript due date (90 days later). A reject decision is possible after final submission if the changes are not deemed by the Editor and/or sponsoring Associate Editor to have sufficiently addressed the indicated changes. The Editor’s final accept/reject decision will be made within 15 days of the author’s final manuscript submission.
3. Reject. The author is notified by the sponsoring Associate Editor of the rejection of the manuscript and the reason for the rejection.
In each case, copies of the peer reviewer’s comments are provided to the author. Each phase of the review, re-submission, and publication process takes approximately 90-days in order to ensure that sufficient time is afforded for quality reviews and changes to manuscripts, some of which may be significant. Total time from initial manuscript submission to publication in JEA is approximately 9 months. Authors should use the manuscript submission checklist on page 7.
Manuscript Format: Manuscripts are to be submitted electronically by the required due date as an attachment to an e-mail that is addressed to the current Editor at

. JEA follows the MIS Quarterly format for manuscript submissions. This format is summarized as follows:
- All manuscripts will use the Word® (.doc) file formats. Tables and figures should be included in electronic file. Please include all figures and tables in the same electronic file that contains the Word® document. Tables and figures should use the Arial font.
- Number the lines in the manuscript, restarting the line count on each page. In Word, you do this with the Layout tab in Page Setup.
